RONCO DELLE MELE | Harvest Sauvignon 2019

The 2019 Sauvignon Harvest brings us great satisfaction and joy for the quality of the grapes harvested, achieved thanks to the excellent weather conditions and our constant hard work in the vineyard! But not only this, the Harvest also brings us wonderful images, which we also enjoy this year for the first time.

Impressions during the Harvest of SAUVIGNON that were recorded from above, in one of the most important and representative vineyards of the Venica & Venica winery: RONCO DELLE MELE.

In the video you can admire the beautiful location of this vineyard. In the background you can see the Julian Alps and the glacier of Monte Canin. Its north-west exposure and special microclimate enable the production of Sauvignon grapes of the highest quality.

The grapes are harvested strictly by hand, as in all our vineyards. During transport to the cellar, we protect the grapes from excessive sun exposure by means of shade cloths.

The video also captures the arrival of the grapes at our winery, where they are destemmed and crushed. The process from harvesting to the grapes entering the press takes place in the shortest possible time.

The 2019 Harvest at Venica has begun!

The long-awaited Harvest 2019 has begun! This start is the 89th in our family history!

We wanted to commemorate this moment with a very special photo. Our whole family on three of our tractors, which in the past have marked the history of agricultural vehicles: the Porsche Tractors with 1, 2 and 3 cylinders.

Porsche Tractors

Porsche tractors are the vintage tractors par excellence, developed and built between the 1940s and 1950s, with air-cooled engines. They were state-of-the-art machines for the time, ahead of other manufacturers, who were still producing 'hot-head' and petrol tractors at that time.

We experienced some really exciting moments at the start of Harvest 2019! It was the first time that these three tractor models were brought together for an official occasion, and this event took place right on our farm. For Gianni and Giorgio Venica it was naturally a moment of particular joy, given their great passion for vintage machines and tractors.

As every year on this occasion, the harvest began with our Pinot Grigio grapes, followed by Sauvignon from Ronco delle Mele.

Two generations of the Venica family

Here is who was there during this start of Vendemmia 2019, which saw the entire third and fourth generations of the Venica family reunited:

Gianni Venica, Giorgio Venica, Giampaolo Venica, Ornella Venica, Serena Venica, Marta Venica, Virgini Fruch, Giulia Venica and Adelaide Venica

VENICA & VENICA among the excellencies recommended by 'USA TODAY'

USA TODAY: Tasting tour of Italy’s Friuli-Venezia Giulia

The Venica family is honoured to be among the few excellences, which the US newspaper 'USA Today' mentioned for a culinary tour of our region.
>> … Giampaolo Venica, whose wines can be found in some of the best restaurants in the world, is one of the region’s most enthusiastic ambassadors.
His family’s almost-90-year-old Venica & Venica winery is known for its fragrant whites – Friulano, Malvasia and Sauvignon Blanc. The vineyards’ unique location in the picturesque Collio DOC gives the wines impressive depth. “The rolling hills with many microclimates surrounded by trees allow for wines with more complexity.” says Venica.

Tastings at the winery, which has several rooms for rent on the property, naturally feature a bounty of salumi from the best Friulian producers. “We pair the wines with products like local prosciutto, local cheeses and fresh fish from the Adriatic,” he says…<<

Telling Venica wines | Ornella Venica in Milan

Little stories about the origin of 3 of Venica's wines - Ribolla Gialla L'Adelchi, Pinot Bianco Talis and Friulano (ex Tocaj) Ronco delle Cime - told by Ornella Venica during a tasting at the HOSTERIA DI VIA STOPPANI on 26 - 28 June 2019 in Milan.

Here are the 4 Venica Wines at the Tasting - Dinner .

Pinot Bianco Talis, DOC Collio 2018. "Talis" in Friulian means "dandelion". The tasting characteristics of this wine and its bouquet are reminiscent of field grasses and rennet apple.
Ribolla Gialla L'Adelchi, DOC Collio 2018. Gianni and Giorgio Venica dedicated this wine to their father in 2007. L'Adelchi represents the bond and the passing of the baton from one generation to the next. Its bouquet is reminiscent of wood, chestnut and acacia.
Friulano, ex Tocaj, Ronco delle Cime, DOC Collio 2018. Friulano is a wine that tells the stories of a borderland, linked to the traditions of a family and a land. 'Ronco delle Cime' is the area name of the vineyard and is one of the Venica family's important labels. The Friulano has fruity notes of apple, banana, white peach and pear.
Verduzzo Toblar, IGT Venezia Giulia 2012. 'Toblar' is the place where the grapes are dried and gives this wine its name. Verduzzo giallo has very ancient autochthonous origins and its grape varieties are mainly found in the areas of origin. Toblar has an acacia aroma and a balanced honey flavour.

Paired with a Friulano menu.
Lentil pate, Prawns "Busara" style, Salviade (fried sage)
"Cjalsons alle Erbe with smoked ricotta cheese
Cevàpcici with celeriac and carrot salad

First sustainability report: DOING GOOD FOR GOOD

2018 / 2019 - We are pleased to present you with our First Sustainability Report entitled FARE BENE PER FARE DEL BENE. A document that transparently recounts our commitment to the territory, our respect for our land and biodiversity, the valorisation of our various resources, and our morality in working to pass on and preserve.

PREFACE by CARLO CAMBI

>> ... So to greet with satisfaction and respect the sustainability (or social) balance sheet that Venica presents here pays credit to an effort that is first and foremost conceptual rather than operational. After all, the VENICA values are family cohesion, they are the constant appeal to the roots and inheritance of tradition, they are the balanced measuring of innovation, they are the pouring of all energy into the company, but with a smile, to draw from the harmony of creation, the harmony of production.

It is enough - to read this sustainability report - to taste a Ronco Cime, a Ronco Mele, a Merlot or a Ribolla and that excellent Pinot Bianco signed VENICA to understand that those bottles are born from a life project that guides the production process in the vineyard.

You feel a sense of belonging in them, you discover the values of the territory, you taste the will and the effort, you are inebriated by the friendly familiarity, and finally you become satisfied with total quality. Which is yes, product quality, but first and foremost it is the will to work well and it is quality of design.
VENICA's wines are products of value, the price is just a conventional mediation to express the eternal relationship that binds this family to its land.

The First Sustainability Report: a document, a story, a life project!

But here is the need to move towards the future: it is the sustainability report that certifies the company's harmonious and committed way of being. This is how these intentions should be read, in this light the figures should be examined, knowing that that of the VENICA in Dolegna, where the Collio is manifested in its magnificence of naturalness and in its anthropic depth through the historical becoming, is the presence of generations. Each passing of the baton for the VENICA family has meant consolidating experiences and perpetuating an oath of loyalty to their land, to their origins, to their morality in working to hand down, to preserve, to be shrewd stewards of Creation and not despoilers - as Benedetto da Norcia would have recommended.

If one has a profit-maximising mentality, one does not perpetuate the land for generations as the VENICAs did, who today, as then, preserve their land to continue to benefit from it, giving us with their wines the happiness of Leonardo's memory.

The VENICA have an innate sustainability that today they rightly translate into a document. Here: this first sustainability report is the synthesis of this path.
Well aware - and here is another anniversary that makes us aware that wine is an agriCultural product - that two hundred years after the publication of Giacomo Leopardi's L'Infinito with the immense poet from Recanati who was an admirer and connoisseur of wine, we can say:
"Wine is the most certain, and (without comparison) the most effective consoler. Therefore vigour; therefore nature; wine is good at awakening new hopes and dispelling the bitterness of tensions'.
In the end, therein lies sustainability.... <<

WOMEN OF FOOD: Ornella Venica

Ornella: 'the earth is our home, we must care for it and protect it'.

For Venica & Venica, sustainability is certainly not a marketing slogan, it is a daily commitment that starts far away.

An interview in 'WOMEN OF FOOD' with Ornella Venica dedicated to the topic of sustainability, the important road that VENICA & VENICA has taken by joining the special project for sustainable viticulture called V.I.V.A together with other companies in the wine chain from different Italian regions. VENICA & VENICA on 17 February will present its first sustainability report to its network of agents, a document that only large listed companies are required to present.

"THE WOMEN OF FOOD" - The champions of Italian Agribusiness

by Alessandra Apicella

"Last year, 650 guests stayed at the Venica & Venica estate, and the most common reaction is always the same, amazement: they had seen the pictures on the website, but here everything is more beautiful in person. "They are won over by the green, which in this land has hundreds of shades and which instils a sense of peace and balance, they confide it to us but then they talk about it with friends and acquaintances, they become our best ambassadors," says Ornella.

Ornella is Gianni's wife, the company and its land are her home, she has been telling them with passion for 32 years as the whole family does.

The brothers Gianni and Giorgio are the third generation of the Venica family, but today the fourth generation is also entering the field, the sons, who, with the same attachment to the land and its fruits, are committing themselves to a path of continuous improvement and enhancement. Everyone is carving out a different role for themselves, but they all know very well how their wine is made and know the secrets of their soils.

"Collio is an area of 1300 hectares, famous for its DOC wine, which it produces and exports all over the world. 7 million bottles a year are produced. - says Ornella - Our company occupies the northernmost part of Collio, there are 40 hectares located on different hills, each with different microclimates, and we are 40 metres from the sea as the crow flies. A magical situation that infuses the wine with unique and multifaceted nuances."

The company has long been committed to sustainability.

"In the beginning, our ancestors cultivated respecting the rhythms and needs of nature," Ornella says, "then there was the boom of efficiency and productivity.  Herbicides and synthetic products helped to ward off insects and diseases, everything seemed to give faster more results. But at some point we realised the tide of damage we were helping to create. This way of operating was ruining the land, we started to study and came to scientifically discover that our ancestors had made the right choices. We went back to basics, we switched to organic and biodynamic. And the health of the land and the quality of the wine proved us right'.

Pilot project for sustainable viticulture: V.I.V.A.

In 2011, the Ministry of the Environment, in cooperation with a number of universities, launched a special project for sustainable viticulture called V.I.V.A. and Venica & Venica participates in it with other companies in the wine chain from various Italian regions. It is a pilot project based on a scrupulous path that has all stages - from cultivation to production, to bottling - monitored according to four parameters: water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity and social relationship.

"It is truly a complex path, which involves continuous improvement and all stages must be recorded and certified by an external body. Each new milestone is the starting point for better results. In 2013, the first certification arrived and we were very proud of it. We are passionate about sustainability because we love our land. We are certain that only by committing ourselves to respect nature and mankind will we be able to leave our children and our children's children all the resources they need to live well."

New at Venica: The first sustainability report

Venica & Venica on 17 February will present its first sustainability report to its agent network, a document that only large listed companies are required to present. This is a strong and important signal for the precious little company in Collio."
